Kim Mackey | WDAA Board MemberKim Mackey’s lifelong love of horses began far from any traditional “horse country.” Even though she grew up in an area without a strong equestrian presence, the passion was always there. In her late 20s—while preparing to donate a kidney to her father—he encouraged her to pursue one of her lifelong dreams: to ride and own a horse. After her very first ride, there was no turning back. She quickly fell in love with riding and soon purchased her first horse. Recently retired from a 30-year career in law enforcement, Kim credits horses as her lifeline during those demanding years. They were her release—the way she processed and recovered from the difficult things she saw, heard, and experienced in her work. Riding and caring for horses brought her peace, stress relief, and joy. Throughout her career, Kim worked part-time on farms, gaining hands-on experience in equine care. Now, in her “semi-retirement,” she manages a farm with over 60 horses full-time. She currently owns two horses: Storm, her 30-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse, and Cloud 9, her 21-year-old rescued Quarter Horse. Cloud came into Kim’s life in 2018 from a kill pen—emaciated, broken, and fearful. With patience and care, Kim earned Cloud’s trust, began dressage lessons, and soon discovered the discipline of Western Dressage. She also likes to compete in Obstacles and Working Equitation. The supportive, welcoming community of Western Dressage riders drew Kim in even further. In 2020, she began assisting with sponsorships for the WDAA World Show, and she now continues to serve as the Sponsorship Chair for the World Show. In addition to her equestrian life, Kim is the founder and owner of Candid Approach Consulting, where she draws on her leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills to help veterinary leaders build stronger, more cohesive teams. Whether in the barn or the boardroom, Kim’s straightforward, compassionate approach reflects the same dedication she brings to every ride: calm, confidence, and a focus on building trust—values that guide both her horses and the teams she works with. |
